Sara Jane Caum, 79, high school guidance counselor, passed away after a recent illness at Country Meadows in Mechanicsburg, PA on Saturday, May 24, 2008. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of the late Charlotte May and Wallace B. Caum. She graduated from John Harris High School in Harrisburg and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Syracuse University where she was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. She earned her Masters degree in Education Counseling at Penn State University, State College, PA. Miss Caum began her career as an English teacher at Harrisburg Junior High School. After she had earned her master’s degree, she was a guidance counselor at the McCaskey High School in Lancaster. Thereafter, she had a long and distinguished career as a counselor at the Central Dauphin High School in suburban Harrisburg until her retirement in 1993. Miss Caum received Recognition Awards from both the Pennsylvania School Counselors Association and the Pennsylvania Association for College Admissions Counselors. She was active in both organizations for many years, including a lengthy period in which she served on the Executive Committee of the Pennsylvania School Counselors Association. In addition, she was an active member of the Syracuse University Alumni Association, serving for numerous years as both Secretary and President. She was a Junior League member, having attained Sustainer status in both the Lancaster and Harrisburg chapters. She also served as trustee at Derry St. United Methodist Church in Harrisburg during her long and faithful membership there. Her hobbies included attending Metropolitan Opera performances, knitting many lovely sweaters for her family, raising beautiful roses, and she was an active participant in a swim club and a Lancaster bridge club. In addition, she was an enthusiastic supporter of the Central Dauphin‘s wrestling teams for many years. Her home was graced with many mementos and artworks by her students, given to her in appreciation for her help and support during her years as guidance counselor. Her ocean cruises to Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia and Alaska particularly delighted her, as did her other travels to the northeastern United States. Miss Caum is survived by her sister, Bette Caum Royal of St. Davids, PA, two nieces, Jan Morris of Limerick, PA and Susan Royal of Fredonia, NY, and their children Christopher Morris, Daria Jones and Ethan Jones. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 12:00 p.m. in the Fackler-Wiedeman Funeral Home, 23rd and Derry Streets, Harrisburg. Private burial in East Harrisburg Cemetery. There will be no viewing or visitation. In lieu of flowers,
the family has designated the Derry Street United Methodist Church at
1508 Derry St., Harrisburg, PA 17104, for gifts in her memory. |
