Zarko Mrkona


Zarko Mrkona, 81, of Steelton, died Thursday, January 24, 2008 in Harrisburg Hospital .

He was a graduate of Steelton High School Class of 1944, a former employee of Olmsted Air Force Base, Middletown and a retired quality control inspector for the former New Cumberland Army Depot.

Zarko was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of St. Nicholas Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church, Oberlin, where he served as a Church Greeter, former member of the Church Board, Past Board Member of the American Civic Organization, former member of the SSS Marinkovich Church Choir, and a member of the Serbian National Federation Lodge No. 37. He was a former active member of the Steel-High Roller Club, a lifetime member of the VFW Post 710, Steelton and an avid sports fan, especially supporting the Steel-High Rollers.

He is survived by three sisters, Mildred Belic, Olga Klipa and Helen Miscevich, all of Steelton; four nieces, Sandra Book of Dillsburg, Nadine, Cheryl and Christina Klipa, all of Steelton; two nephews, Miles Belic, Jr. of Etters and Louis Belic of Steelton; several great nieces and great nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 11:00 am in St. Nicholas Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church, Oberlin, with Very Rev. Stavrofor Srboljub Jockovich, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be Churchville Cemetery , Oberlin. A viewing will be held on Monday from 7 until 9:00 pm in Wiedeman Funeral Home, 357 S. Second St. , Steelton and on Tuesday from 10 until 11:00 am in his church. Pomen will be offered on Monday at 7:30 pm in the funeral home.
