Obituary of Sophie Papandrea

Sophie Marina (Macut) Papandrea, , 95, was delivered into her Savior's arms on Monday, May 15, 2017, surrounded by her family and friends at Country Meadows Senior Living in Mechanicsburg, PA. Born in Steelton , PA on March 22, 1922 to the late Mary Novakoska and Miles Macut, she was one of sixteen children and raised in the Serbian faith. She married Joseph J. Papandrea, Sr. on February 13, 1942. He preceded her in death February 9, 2012. They were married 70 blessed years.

Sophie attended school in Steelton. Early in her career, she was employed at Olmsted Air Force Base in Middletown, PA and later as an LPN for 30 years in her brother Dr. S. Sava Macut's family medical practice in Rutherford. She was a deeply spiritual woman, an active member of St. Catherine Laboure Roman Catholic Church and the National Council of Catholic Women. Sophie's talents were many. She was an accomplished seamstress, florist, community volunteer and friend who loved to cook and entertain. She loved playing bingo, gambling at any casino and dancing the polka.

She was predeceased by sisters, Helen Pederson, Lilian Vuich, Ann Piconi, Joanna, Julie, Mary and Sylvia Macut; brothers, Alexander, Stepfen, Paul, Peter, Matthew and wife, Ann, and John and wife Glenda Macut.

Sophie will be remembered by daughter, Yolanda (Josie) and husband, James Gallagher of Harrisburg; son, Joseph J. Jr. and wife, Janice Papandrea of Ft. Myers, FL; brother, Dr. S. Sava and wife Dorothy Macut and sister, Martha and husband, James Santanna, Sr. both of Harrisburg; grandchildren, Michael Gallagher of Harrisburg, Joseph and wife Heather Gallagher of Fountainville, Jill (Papandrea) and husband, John Baglanis of Ft. Myers, FL, Daniel and wife Nina Gallagher of Harrisburg; great grandchildren, Ryan, Ian, Nico, Carmela Gallagher, Ella and Alexander Baglanis and Sal True; sisters-in-law, Kathryn and Catherine Macut of Harrisburg; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at 11:00 am in St. Catherine Laboure Roman Catholic Church with Very Rev. Neil S. Sullivan, VF, her Pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:00 am in her church. Arrangements are being handled by Wiedeman Funeral Home, Steelton.
