Earl H. Lippert

Earl Harvey Lippert, 82, of Shopes Gardens, Lower Swatara Twp., Middletown, passed away Monday, September 30, 2024, at Penn State Hershey Medical Center with his daughters, Lisa and Michelle, by his side.

He was the loving son of the late Charles W. and Helen E. (Shive) Lippert, and was born March 23, 1942 in the Keystone Hospital in Harrisburg. Earl Harvey was named for his paternal Uncle, Earl S. Lippert, and his maternal Uncle, Harvey R. Shive.

He was raised in South Harrisburg, where his Lippert family had lived for one hundred years, from about 1870, until 1972, when Hurricane/Tropical Storm Agnes devastated the area. His Mother and Grandmother still lived on S. Cameron St. at the time, and they had to be told to evacuate because of the probable flooding. In the aftermath, all of the homes his families lived in were torn down.

Earl attended grades 1-5 in the old Foose School, and 6th grade in the new L.O. Foose Elementary School on South 13th Street. While attending the old Foose, in the fourth grade, he became a Patrol Boy, then in the fifth grade, he was promoted to a 2nd Lieutenant, and then in the sixth grade, he was elected the 1st Captain of Patrols in the newly built Foose School. He also attended Edison Junior High School, and he was a very proud graduate of John Harris High School, Class of 1960.

He first worked for the Acme Supermarket on S. Cameron St. while in High School; and then Hervitz Packing Company; and finally, Bethlehem Steel Co., before starting to work for the Post Office in 1968.

He retired from the United States Postal Service in April 2002, with almost 33 ½ years of service, starting first as a Mail Handler in November 1968, and then as a Letter Carrier for 32 years, starting in February 1970, working out of the Harrisburg Post Office, then with the Lower Paxton Branch in Paxtonia, as his last station. He is a 50-year member of the National Assn. of Letter Carriers, Local Chapter (The Allen Stuart Branch) 500, and he has been Awarded a 50 Year Pin, along with a Life Member Gold Card, of which he is very proud and honored.

In all he had worked out of the Main Post Office on Market St.; the Steelton Branch; the Paxtang Branch, which was later moved to the new Swatara Branch in Lawnton; and the Linglestown Branch, which was later moved to the new Lower Paxton Branch in Paxtonia. For the last 14 years of his career with the Post Office, his route included the Colonial Park Mall.

Earl was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution; and also, a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 594; and he is a charter member of the Camp Curtin Historical Society, and is a member of their Civil War Descendant Brigade; The Perry Historians, Newport; and he was a member of the Capital Area Genealogical Society, Harrisburg; South Central Genealogical Society, York; and he was a member of many other organizations over the years.

Earl was very involved in genealogy; and he also was very interested in all history, especially local history and the Civil War.

Earl loved all of his family very much, and loved spending time with them.

Earl’s most loving wife of 60 years, Patricia A. (Orner) Lippert, so very sadly, preceded him in death on September 1, 2020. They met in 1956, and were together for 64 years.

Surviving are his two loving daughters, Lisa A. (Robert) Edgett, formerly of Kenny Lake, Alaska; and Michelle D. (Paul) Carnes, Lower Swatara Twp., Middletown, and his five loving grandchildren, Shelby L. Schiefer Bair; Jared C. Schiefer; Katelyn M. Carnes; Presley A. Carnes; and Lyndsay R. Carnes; and one great granddaughter, Jayd Bair. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Carol E. (Frank) Popp; and Judy M. Putric; along with nephews, nieces, and cousins.

He was also pre-deceased by his Father, Charles W. Lippert in 1961; his Mother, Helen E. (Shive) Lippert Hayes in 2013; his Step-Father, Lacy Hayes in 2013; his maternal Grandparents, “Pappy” Charles M. Shive in 1948; and “Grandma” Elva M. (Evelhoch) Shive in 1984; and his maternal Great Grandmother, “Granny” Ettie Bell (Minich) Evelhoch in 1948. He was also preceded in death by his oldest and best friend, Glenn A. Martin, in January 2021.
