Edwin W. Bittner, 94, of Mechanicsburg, died peacefully and with dignity on Saturday, March 22, 2025 at Columbia Cottage with family by his side. Born in 1930 in Lemoyne, he was the son of the late John and Ethyl (Steckman) Bittner. He was the loving husband of Anna L. (Rajk) Bittner, with whom he shared 72 years of marriage.
Edwin graduated from Lemoyne High School in 1949 where he lettered in Track and Field. He worked as a Supervisor of Transportation for 40 years with Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, and Conrail. He was a member of St. Katharine Drexel Parish.
Edwin’s love of singing began in high school and continued throughout his life. He sang with and helped to manage the West Shore Choral Society, The Cumberland Singers, and sang with many local churches. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife, and they went on many trips around the US and Europe. He was a lifelong Republican and an avid spectator of any sporting event.
Edwin was known for his generous spirit and devotion to helping others. He volunteered and participated in fundraising efforts for local school bands and orchestras. He was a member of the Golden Hearts Club and collected donations for Thanksgiving food baskets as well as personally distributing them to families in need. He formed a breakfast club for his fellow Lemoyne classmates “The 49ers” in order to keep in touch with each other throughout the years.
In addition to his wife, Edwin is survived by his children Sharon DeSantis of Mechanicsburg, James Bittner of Ocean City, MD, and Dr. Edwin Bittner, Jr. of Philadelphia and Asbury Park, NJ; grandson Anthony J. DeSantis of Mount Holly Springs; and brother Clarke Bittner of Dallas, PA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers James Bittner, John Bittner, and William Bittner.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 28, 2025 in St. Katharine Drexel Roman Catholic Church, 1 Peters Drive in Mechanicsburg. A Viewing will be held in the church prior to Mass from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM. Burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the charity of one’s choosing.
