John S. Herigan, Sr., 89, of Middletown, entered into eternal rest on July 27, 2024 at Oak Hill Village, Middletown. John was born May 16, 1935; he was the son of the late John H. and Susan Herigan of Steelton, PA.
John is survived by the love of his life, Margaret, with whom he enjoyed 63 years of marriage; son, John S. Herigan, Jr. of Harrisburg; daughter, Susan Erdman (Barry) of Dallas, PA and cherished granddaughter, Amanda Erdman of Lawrenceville, PA. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Powell and brother William Herigan (surviving spouse, Patricia).
John proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, Third Infantry Division, from 1957 to 1959, in Schweinfurt, Germany. In 1959, following his military service, he began a distinguished career with the Central Dauphin School District. He taught grades four through six at Rutherford and Lawnton Elementary for ten years. John served as Principal of Mountain View and Penbrook Elementary for nine years. He finished his career as Director of Elementary Education, a position he held for 16 years. After retiring from Central Dauphin School District, John served as Adjunct Professor at Penn State, Shippensburg, and Temple Universities for nine years where he helped to mentor student teachers. Nothing made John prouder than his granddaughter following in his footsteps to become an accomplished educator herself.
Love was at the center of John's life. He loved God, his family, educating children, and his church family. He lived his life to serve God and make a difference along the way. John was an active and faithful member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He served in various roles at church; John was a member of Church Council, Men in Mission, prayer partners and was a Sunday School Teacher and a food pantry volunteer. Another passion of John's was baseball; he was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox.
The family wishes to thank Gentiva Hospice and Oak Hill staff. The doctors, nurses, and staff all provided John, and continue to provide Margaret, with compassion and care that is second to none.
