John Woods

John Andrew Woods, 79, of Newport, PA, passed away at home on Monday, July 1, 2024.

John was born on March 17, 1945 to Andrew John Woods and Mary Ann (Glunt) Woods in Chambersburg, PA. He graduated from Fannett-Metal High School in Franklin County, PA in 1963.

John served his country as a ranked sergeant in the Army for 2 years during the Vietnam era, stationed in Korea where he reconstructed helicopter blades.

John was employed at the American Can Company in Chambersburg and later at Stanley Spring Works, where he retired.

John married Delores (Hilmer) Meck on November 14, 1969 and helped raise her four children. They were married for 32 years until her passing in 2001. He married Evelyn (Deimler) Bretz on December 16, 2002, and they were married for 22 years until her passing earlier this year 2024.

John enjoyed NASCAR racing in his early days, hunting, the Phillies and the Eagles, and gospel music.

John was preceded in death by his parents, sister Geraldine (Glunt) Nimmon, sister Della Mae (Woods) Ile, first wife Delores, daughter Juanita (Meck) Funk, daughter Dolly (Meck) Notz, second wife Evelyn, granddaughter Angela Meck, great granddaughter Kylee Keiser, and grandson Joshua Meck.

He is survived by Bobby Woods, Vivian (Meck) Notz, Walter Meck IV, James Bretz, Judy (Bretz) Mitchell, Wesley Bretz, Tracy (Bretz) Straley, Craig Bretz, Shane Bretz, and Troy Bretz, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Services will be held at Wiedeman Funeral Home, 357 S Harrisburg St, Oberlin , PA 17113 onSaturday, July 6, 2024 at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Rowland Foster officiating. A Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Committal will follow at Lower Path Valley Cemetery in Fannettsburg, PA. There will be an Honor Guard presentation of the flag.
