Robert J. “Bob” Jones, 81, went onto the last great hunting trip in the sky on Tuesday, September 14, peacefully, at his home in Steelton. “Trapper” was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting and snake hunts; activities at the Penn-Harris Gun Club and Sinnemahoning Sportsmen’s Club and visiting his favorite place on Earth, his home away from home, Camp Mill Run in Cameron County. “Up State” he enjoyed the Wharton Inn and while there, admiring the hummingbirds at the window.
Never one to back down from hard work, he was retired from the Eleven Inch Bar Mill at the Bethlehem Steel Plant in Steelton. A Penn State football fan, he was able to enjoy the Nittany Lions’ 44-13 win over Ball State. Nothing like going out on a victory! You could always get the long range forecast from Bob as he rarely missed Weather World. He was a friend to many and all those wishing to honor his legacy at the Steelton 5th Ward, Dutch and Italian Clubs can do so by having a shot or an Old Milwaukee for “Bif.”
He may have been known by many names, but “Grandpa Bobby” was his proudest title to his 13 grand-turkeys, and four great-grand-turkeys: his living legacy. He is survived by the Jones Family “Chief,” his wife of 62 years, Sandra (née Paul), and children Debbie (Greg), Mary Ellen (Jim), John (Maryann) and Barbara (Ken). He was the older, but shorter, brother of Richard “Dick” Jones (Trudy), and uncle to Robert and Michael (Kirsten). He was predeceased by his father and mother, John and C. Virginia (née Markowski) Jones and and infant son, Robert J. Jones, Jr., whose memories Bob fervently honored during his life. When you’re done reading this, Bob would want you to get off your cell phone and get outside.
Visitation will take place Friday, September 24 at Wiedeman Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Oberlin from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm with a memorial service following immediately at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Prince of Peace Parish, 815 S. 2nd Street, Steelton, PA 17113 or the Ryan Lee Mohn Memorial Foundation, c/o 529 Pine Street, Steelton, PA 17113.
The Jones Family would like to thank Dr. William Wewer and his staff and Homeland Hospice for the care and comfort provided in Bob’s final weeks.
