John D. Zales, 71, of Chambers Hill, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 6, 2019 after a long illness.
John taught at York Catholic High School from 1969 to 1986, organizing their first computer curriculum and lab. He continued teaching at HACC from 1986 until 2018, retiring as a Senior Professor in the Computer Science Department, helping to develop the IT curriculum at all five HACC campuses, as well as on the internet. John was a member of Prince of Peace Roman Catholic Parish, Steelton, where he served as a Lector for several years. He also enjoyed helping in the kitchen at church picnics. He was a member of St. Aloysius Lodge No. 42 KSKJ.
He was the son of the late John J. and Mary Oslay Zales. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Catherine B. Belsak Zales; one son, John-Paul Zales and his wife, Nichole and their daughters, Evey and Ruby Zales; one sister, Mary Clare Zales of Enhaut and her fiance', Lawrence Williamson; one brother, Peter Zales of Philadelphia; nephews, Steve Zales, Jer Carpenter, and Jon Carpenter; nieces, Jocelyn Lashley and Kirsten Sosnowski; cousins, Franklin Zales, Robert Zales, Michele Bacha and Andrew C. Bacha. He was preceded in death by his brother, Stephen A. Zales.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 11:00 am in Prince of Peace-Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church with Very Rev. David L. Danneker, his Pastor, as Celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Thursday from 9:00 am until 10:30 am in Wiedeman Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 357 S. Second St., Steelton, PA.
