Obituary of Francis Menei

Rev. Francis T. Menei, 80, of Misericordia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, York, died Thursday, June 6, 2019 in the Center. He was a graduate of the Philadelphia Public School System and St. Charles Borromeo College and Seminary, Overbrook, and obtained his Masters Degree at the University of Notre Dame. He was ordained a Priest on May 20, 1967 in the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, Philadelphia. From 1967 to 1969 he served as a Parish Priest in Philadelphia and from 1969 to 1979 was a teacher at Cardinal Dougherty High School. In 1979, he was named Chaplain of the Philadelphia Prison System, and shortly afterward at Graterford Penitentiary. He later became Chief Chaplain for the entire Commonwealth of PA State Penitentiaries, with his office in Camp Hill and his residence at St. Ann's, Steelton. In 2002, Father transferred to the Diocese of Harrisburg and was appointed Pastor of St. Richard Roman Catholic Church, Manheim, where he served until his retirement. Father was the son of the late Frederick J. and Rose M. Covello Menei and is survived by one brother, Gerald F. Menei of Laurel Hill, NJ and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and Linda M. Sullivan, of Carlisle, his Caregiver. Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated on Friday, June 14, 2019 at 11:00 am in St. Catherine Laboure Roman Catholic Church, 4000 Derry St., Swatara Twp. with Most Rev. Ronald W. Gainer, D.D., JCL, Bishop of Harrisburg, as the Principal Celebrant. Burial with be in the Priests' Circle at Holy Cross Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Friday from 9:00 am until 10:45 am in St. Catherine Laboure Church. Arrangements are being handled by Wiedeman Funeral Home and Cremation Services - STEELTON. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Misericordia Nursing and Rehabiliation Center, 998 S. Russell St., York, PA 17402.
