Obituary of John Sempeles

John J. Sempeles, 69, of Lower Allen Township, passed peacefully on Saturday November 23, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Harrisburg, on November 12, 1950, to the late James and Ellen Bradford Sempeles. John was a graduate of John Harris High School, class of 1968, and Penn State University. Many know John from his time playing bass guitar with local bands, including The Poor Boys, Soul Impression, and Green Street. For generations, the Sempeles Family operated restaurants in the Harrisburg area, most notably Zorba’s Lounge. John was a co-founder of local favorite “The Jackson House” on 6th and Boas Streets in Harrisburg. Following those adventures, John began a 35-year career with Hoover Inc., of Mechanicsburg, where he was still working as National Accounts Manager until his passing. John was a member of AHEPA Chapter #64 and a member of the Lawnton Legion Post 998. John is survived by his loving wife, the former Susan Olmstead, with whom he would have celebrated 36 years of marriage this December. Two children; Christopher J. Sempeles of Denver, CO, and Ellie K. Sempeles of Camp Hill; numerous nieces and nephews; and a beloved extended family, including cousins “Peep” Lutz (and husband Clair); Kim Whitman (and wife Bev); sister- and brother-in law Cindy and John Semic; and sister-in-law Kay DeFilippo. A Viewing will be held on Saturday, November 30th, 2019, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm in Wiedeman Funeral Home and Cremation Services; 2253 Derry St., Harrisburg. A Celebration of Life and Luncheon will follow at 1:00 pm in Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral Social Hall, 1000 Yverdon Dr. Camp Hill, PA 17011. Private Burial will be held in East Harrisburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bethesda Mission, PO Box 3041, Harrisburg PA, 17105 or to “Turkeys for the Needy,” the charitable AHEPA program for local families that John helped to start last year.
