Obituary of George Benkovic, Sr.
George M. Benkovic, Sr., 94, of Steelton, died on Sunday, November 24, 2019 in UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg Hospital.
He was the son of the late Ivan and Barbara Tomasic Benkovic. George was a graduate of Steelton High School Class of 1943 and was a member of Prince of Peace Roman Catholic Parish, Steelton, St. Lawrence Lodge No. 13, Croatian Fraternal Union, and a US Navy veteran of World War II. He retired as a Supervisor from the US Postal Service and was previously employed by Bethlehem Steel Corp.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, George M. Benkovic, Jr.; a daughter, Julie Ann Laughlin; a granddaughter, Lisa Laughlin; six sisters, Helen, Anna and Mary Benkovic, Barbara Long, Elizabeth Day and Catherine Simpson; and one brother, John W. Benkovic.
George is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Julia Smey Benkovic; a son, Robert S. Benkovic, Sr. and his wife, Cheryl; six grandchildren, Jennifer Monahan (Tim), Robert S Benkovic, Jr. (Sarah), Joseph Benkovic, Ryan, Kelly and Kevin Laughlin; six great grandchildren, Margaret and Michael Monahan, William, Anna, Jonathan and Ryan Benkovic; son-in-law, Gary Laughlin; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Benkovic; and two step grandsons, Joshua Laughlin and Dale Railing.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at 11:00 am in Prince of Peace-Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church with Very Rev. David L. Danneker, his Pastor, as Celebrant. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery with full military honors. A viewing will be held on Tuesday from 9:00 am until 10:30 am in Wiedeman Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 357 S. Second St., Steelton.
